Microsoft is now offering its Office 365 for government-only cloud. According to Microsoft, Office 365 for Government is a new multi-tenant service that stores US government data in segregated community cloud.
Office 365 for Government includes productivity and collaboration services including Exchange Online, Lync Online, Sharepoint Online and Office Professional Plus.
Microsoft has added the support of the most rigorous global and regional standards in Office 365, such as ISO 27001, SAS70 Type II, EU Safe Harbor, EU Model Clauses, the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the US Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and the US Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA). In addition to these standards, Microsoft says it plans to add support Criminal Justice Information Security (CJIS) policies by the end of September, 2012.
Microsoft has also announced that they are planning to support IPv6 in Office 365 for Government by September of 2012.
Even though, Google Apps has been widely adopted by US Government already, and has customers in 44 states. But, since many government agencies already use Office products and collaboration products from Microsoft, Microsoft has a chance here to break through the competition in government sector, but it will depend heavily upon cost saving factor.
According to Microsoft, Office 365 for Government is available immediately.
